Family in Crisis

At what point should a family in crisis seek outside help?
Some families have trouble coping with life’s inevitable crises. In these families even relatively simple problems are not resolved but take on the appearance and feel of major dilemmas. Thus, by their lack of successful coping skills, these families create additional problems for themselves and go from crisis to crisis, with little relief and little pleasure from life or from one another.
Although we all strive for perfection, there is no perfect family. Each family has its own strengths and weaknesses, assets and liabilities, challenges and problems. If your family seems overwhelmed with problems, or if there is a breakdown in relationships within your family, it is probably time for outside help.

Renal Venography

Renal venography is a relatively simple procedure allowing radiographic examination of the main renal veins and their tributaries. In this test, contrast medium is injected by percutaneous catheter passed through the femoral vein and inferior vena cava into the renal vein. Indications for renal venography include renal vein thrombosis, tumor, and venous anomalies.
Purpose

To detect renal vein thrombosis
To evaluate renal vein compression due to extrinsic tumors or retroperitoneal fibrosis
To distinguish renal parenchymal disease and aneurysms from pressure exerted by an adjacent mass

Plasma Ammonia

This test measures plasma levels of ammonia, a nonprotein nitrogen compound that helps maintain acid-base balance. In diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver, ammonia can bypass the liver and accumulate in the blood. Plasma ammonia levels may help indicate the severity of hepatocellular damage.
Purpose

To help monitor the progression of severe hepatic disease and the effectiveness of therapy
To recognize impending or established hepatic coma

Bronchography

Bronchography is X-ray examination of the tracheobronchial tree after instillation of a radiopaque iodine contrast agent through a catheter into the lumens of the trachea and bronchi. The contrast agent coats the bronchial tree, permitting visualization of any anatomic deviations. Bronchography of a localized lung area may be accomplished by instilling contrast dye through a fiber-optic bronchoscope placed in the area to be filmed.

Evoked Potential Studies

These tests evaluate the integrity of visual, somatosensory, and auditory nerve pathways by measuring evoked potentials-the brain’s electrical response to stimulation of the sensory organs or peripheral nerves. Evoked potentials are recorded as electronic impulses by surface electrodes attached to the scalp and skin over various peripheral sensory nerves. A computer extracts these low-amplitude impulses from background brain wave activity and averages the signals from repeated stimuli.

Positive airway pressure

Positive airway pressure (PAP) is a method of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment of sleep apnea, for which it was first developed.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep.

Each episode, called an apnea (Greek: Απνοια (apnoia), from α- (a-), privative, πνέειν (pneein), to breathe), lasts long enough so that one or more breaths are missed, and such episodes occur repeatedly throughout sleep.

Guide to infant weaning – What to give and when

· The World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) recommends that we should start introducing solid foods when babies are around 6 months old.
· Introduce only one new food at each time and wait for 4-5 days for introducing the next new food (for identifying food allergies).

· Do not add any salt, honey or sugar in infant’s food.

The child who has breath-holding spells

GUIDE FOR PARENTS

The problem
About 5% of young children have breath-holding spells. These involuntary spells follow an event such as falling down or being frightened, frustrated, or angry. They usually start when an infant is between 6 and 18 months of age and disappear by 5 or 6 years. They may happen once or twice a day, or once or twice a month. They are not dangerous and have nothing to do with epilepsy.

Egg Allergy

Egg allergies — especially to egg whites — are more common in children than in adults and reactions range from mild to severe. Mild reactions tend to involve the skin and gastrointestinal tracts. Severe allergic reactions can be instantaneous.
If you suffer from an egg allergy, strictly avoiding eggs and food containing egg and egg products is the only way to prevent a reaction. But, it is not always easy to avoid these foods since many unsuspecting products contain eggs.
Always check the label ingredients before you use a product. In addition, check the label each time you buy the product. Manufacturers occasionally change recipes, and a trigger food may be added to the new recipe. Also, keep in mind that some egg substitutes contain egg white.

Proximal Symphalangism, Hyperopia, Conductive Hearing Impairment, and the NOG Gene: 2 New Mutations Otology and Neurotology

NOG gene mutations, which lead to aberrant noggin protein function, give rise to a large spectrum of clinical findings and different symphalangism syndromes. These syndromes are all allelic disorders within the Noggin phenotype spectrum.

Noggin, also known as NOG, is a protein which in humans is encoded by the NOG gene.

The Essence of an Eating Disorder with an emphasis to Anorexia Nervosa

An eating disorder is defined as “a complex compulsion to eat, or not eat, in a way which disturbs physical and mental health.” Many people with eating disorders have no idea that they are suffering from a serious condition, and instead feel that are just acting in accordance with what feels right at the time.

Eating Disorder Causes:

An Eating disorder is the result of irregular and improper diet intake, stress filled lifestyle and the over ambition to reach size zero. Emotional bearing is also one of the reasons. It is a common disorder experienced by a sizable percentage of the population. Weight gain due to junk food habit because of less home cooking and the associated fear of being over weight are the root cause of eating disorder. Eating disorder which includes anorexia,
