Reasons for Considering Ear Surgery

While ear surgery is commonly performed on children between the ages of 4 to 14, it may also be performed on older patients. People visit Dr. Sorokin in New Jersey for otoplasty for a variety of improvements, which include:

  • Bringing proportion to the face if the ears “stick out” too much
  • Correcting folded ear tips (also known as lop ear)
  • Reshaping long or offset earlobes
  • Enhancing very small ears or other congenital defects
  • Reconstructing or repairing an ear that is lost or damaged due to an accidental injury

Adults often combine other facial procedures like a facelift or nose surgery with ear surgery for a more impressive facial enhancement.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is ordinarily performed under general anesthesia for children and local anesthesia for adults. The most common reason for ear surgery is bringing the ears closer to the head. For this procedure, Dr. Sorokin begins by making an incision hidden in the crease behind the ear. This incision allows the cartilage located behind the ears to be reshaped in order to position the ear closer to the head. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the extent of surgery.

There are various surgical techniques involved in correcting irregularities other than protruding ears, such as extended earlobes or missing parts of the ear. Dr. Sorokin is happy to discuss these techniques with you during the initial consultation.

Recovery Following Ear Surgery

Most patients have some swelling and discoloration of the ears after their procedure. Discomfort or tenderness usually responds successfully to over-the-counter medication. After the surgery is completed, Dr. Sorokin will place a turban-like bandage around the patient’s head, which generally will need to be worn for 2 to 5 days. The bandage secures the ear in place and assists with the healing process. Once the bandage is removed, the patient will need to wear a headband during sleep for about 2 weeks. Dr. Sorokin discourages strenuous exercise until the surgical area has healed, which may be several weeks. Complications are extremely rare, but patients should be careful to follow the instructions that Dr. Sorokin provides to minimize their risks.
