Adolphe Rothschild Foundation Hospital of Paris now closer to the Cypriot Patient

Adolphe Rothschild Foundation Hospital, which is one of the most well-known hospitals in France, is one of the most specialized internationally medical institutions in the diagnosis, evaluation and surgical treatment of epilepsy to infants, children and adults with the Pediatric Neurosurgical Department of the Hospital has treated up to now more than 2500 epilepsy cases.

Rothschild Foundation Hospital, which has lately only established a cooperation with a medical services company in Cyprus, is the first reference hospital in France with a more than 20 years’ experience in intracranial explorations called stereo-electro-encephalography (SEEG), which aims to place electrodes in the brain, directly in contact with the area presumed to be responsible for the epilepsy, with very high precision. Other innovative surgical techniques offered by Adolphe Rothschild Foundation Hospital and are now an international reference are hemispherical disconnection or hemispherectomy and endoscopic disconnection of hypothalamic hamartomas (lesion of the brain at the origin of the seizures removed or disconnection of the area of origin of the seizures). According to statistics from the hospital, a more than 50% of children with epilepsy could be cured, while other techniques used can improve the quality of life of children by reducing the frequency and intensity of seizures.

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease taking different forms depending on age and the different areas of the brain affected. For children, this disease acts specifically on the developing brain and can cause various disabilities such as in attention, speech, comprehension and learning difficulties. In many cases Seizures may persist despite anti-epileptic treatment. Nearly in 30% of epilepsies, including rare and serious forms such as Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome which affects children between 2 and 6 years old or West Syndrome, which affects infants less than one year old, surgery might be the only treatment.

Rothschild Foundation Hospital is now accessible to the Cypriot patients as well, either for a consultation in the hospital, or for a remote consultation and diagnosis or TeleMedicine (teleconference with a doctor), since it is now represented in Cyprus by iMER Medical Services.

Rothschild Foundation Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the world to specialize in the treatment of hypothalamic hamartomas, a lesion that occurs during embryogenesis between the 33rd and 41st day of pregnancy and involves ectopic cell differentiation. Diseases treated by the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery include hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid in the brain), craniosynostosis (early convergence of one or more sutures of the newborn’s skull), removal of tumors of the spine, and cervical malformations.
